In the free-to-play browser-based game Deepolis, a far-future Earth’s civilization now lives in the planet’s oceans. Players join one of three factions–the Nauts, Scion, or Jafnhar–and descend into the waters to fight the monsters of the deep in PVE combat or to pit themselves against other factions’ players in PVP battle. Each faction features customizable submarines and fast, streamlined leveling that players can enhance with the purchase of helix, one of two in-game currencies.

Deepolis offers more action than most browser games; the only restrictions on PVP happen in or near local stations, which are safe havens for one or more of the game’s three factions. Each of Deepolis’s factions has access to nine levels of submarine, but upgrades to these vital craft are expensive. Armor, weaponry, and turbines can turn a less sophisticated sub into a fighting machine, though, so players typically think hard about moving up to a new submarine class.

The Deepolis version of an auction house is the Marina, which operates more like a casino; players who bid may not win the item, but still lose money, an effective way of ensuring that the game’s economy never becomes overinflated. Instead, players win jackpot points that can net them real-world money if they’re the lucky winner during that drawing.
